This section reviews Combination Essences as supplied by the world's major makers, and some suggestions of combinations that you might wish to make up yourself from widely available essences.

Descriptions are generally the maker's or originator's own, enhanced by knowledge gained from widespread use of an essence.

When you decide to look further into essences, the choice can become bewildering.

Most flower remedies are known by the name of the relevant flower, which means learning what the properties of each essence are as well as determining what state of mind you wish to treat.

Some producers have created combination sets in the way that Dr Bach created Rescue Remedy. The beauty of this is that it helps you choose in one step, not two.

The first introduction to flower essences for most of us is Rescue Remedy, Five Flower Remedy, or one of the other Trauma and Shock remedies. These are all Combination Remedies. Combinations are particularly useful - they do what their names suggest, and are specially formulated by the essence maker to do just that.

Combination remedies are the easiest way to gain familiarity with choosing flower essences. It's difficult to guess what Honeysuckle, Holly and Purple Flag Flower do - but easier for Femin-essence, Inner Child and Tranquillity.

Is it necessary to use only essences from your own country? The answer is definitely NO, for the essences have global application. Wherever you live, as a member of the human race, we all share similar colours of emotion. All of us can be helped by essences from all around the world, just as we can all appreciate music from different times and different places.

 

Rescue/Crisis/Emergency Essences from around the world

Rescue Remedy (Nelson's), Five Flower Essence (Healing Herbs), Recovery Essence (Ainsworth's), Emergency Essence (Crystal Herbs and Sun Essences), RQ, RQ6, RQ7 (Milagra), Situations de Crise (Deva). The classic combination, formulated by Dr Bach, consists of Cherry Plum, Clematis, Impatiens, Rock Rose and Star of Bethlehem. Some add Larimar, Self Heal or Lotus to enhance the effect. Rescue Remedy helps dissolve the emotional effects of shock, fear, accidents and emergencies, restoring calm and stability.

Emergency Essence (Australian Bush). Containing Crowea Fringed Violet, Grey Spider Flower, Sundew and Waratah. Again this helps ease distress fear and panic, bringing calm and stability.

Crisis Desert Emergency Formulation (Desert Alchemy). Contains Aloe, Cliff Fendlerbush, Desert Holly, Klein's Pencil Cholla Cactus and Purple Aster. Helps one stay calm in danger and in emergency situations.

Crisis Remedy (South African). Contains Bacometra, Disa, Felicia, Flowering Quince, Orange Pincushion, Red Camellia and Strelitzia. Works to bring calm in situations of shock, panic, fear and anxiety.

First Aid (Bailey). Comprising Star of Bethlehem, Ivy and Scabious, this remedy brings calm and stability whilst dissolving emoitonal shock.

Trauma Shock (Harebell). Contains Bluebell, Chamomile, Comfrey and Red Clover. Particularly helpful after physical injury or operations.

Pacific Balancer (Pacific Essences). A great stabiliser and regenerator. Useful in any case of psychic, emotional or physical overload.

First Aid (Findhorn). Contains Scottish Primrose, Thistle, Bell Heather and Daisy.

Pear (Masters). Although a single essence, this particular remedy is a powerful stabiliser in times of shock. It brings peacefulness and a dynamic yet relaxed state of mind.

Terra (Bloesem). Comprises Angelica, Clematis, Mycena, Rode Bosvogeltje Orchid and Yellow Star Tulip. Acts as a first aid remedy in situations of tension, shock and trauma.

 

Combinations to make up yourself

These combinations are not sold made up, but are tried and tested and can easily be put together.

Bach

Relationship Mix - for clear honest communication and forgiveness - Chicory, Gentian, Heather, Holly, Impatiens, Mustard, Pine, Red Chestnut, Sweet Chestnut, Vine, Walnut, Willow.

Bitch Mix (Anger and Irritation) - Beech, Cherry Plum, Holly, Impatiens, Pine, Vine and Willow - for irritability, whether in the case of premenstrual tension or for any wish to dominate and control or for jealousy, negativity and bitterness, or resentment

Confidence Mix - Centaury, Chestnut Bud, Gentian, Larch, Pine, Sweet Chestnut, Walnut, Wild Rose. Builds inner confidence and constancy.

Study and Intuition Mix - Cerato, Chestnut Bud, Clematis, Impatiens, Rock Water, Scleranthus, White Chestnut and Wild Oat. On occasion Wild Rose may be added. Helps you focus, concentrate and study effectively with enthusiasm and without inner distractions.

Change and Bereavement Mix - Chestnut Bud, Gentian, Gorse, Heather, Honeysuckle, Mustard, Pine, Star of Bethlehem, Sweet Chestnut, Walnut, Wild Rose and Willow. Grief (Bailey Essences). Valuable for all who have been bereaved, even in the distant past, or for past or present negative experiences. Also for the many changes that we all face in life.

Carer's and Worry Mix - Agrimony, Gentian, Heather, Red Chestnut and White Chestnut and Tranquillity (Bailey). For sleeplessness add Vervain. Carers often carry a heavy burden for a long time, both emotionally and physically, so Exhaustion Mix is an ideal accompaniment to this mix to refresh and regenerate.

Exhaustion Mix - Elm, Gorse, Hornbeam, Mustard, Oak, Olive, Walnut, Wild Rose and Dynamis Essence. Useful as a pick me up after prolonged effort; also for those with responsibilities that sometimes feel too heavy.

Leadership Mix - Beech, Centaury, Cerato, Chestnut Bud, Elm, Heather, Holly, Impatiens, Oak, Red Chestnut, Rock Water, Scleranthus, Star of Bethlehem, Vervain, Vine, Walnut, Wild Oat. Helps leaders stay in emotional balance.

Addictions Mix - Agrimony, Cherry Plum, Crab Apple, Clematis, Gentian, Larch, Pine, Rock Rose, Star of Bethlehem, White Chestnut, Walnut. Helps break psychological dependencies by strengthening emotional reserves. One of the deep reasons addictions develop is insecurity - a problem the small child overcomes by sucking its thumb. Unfortunately, it is not cool for adults to do this, so they often adopt more harmful habits. This combination will usually need Relationship Mix to follow.

Fears and Nightmares Mix - Aspen, Cherry Plum, Mimulus, Rock Rose, Star of Bethlehem, White Chestnut and Fears (Bailey). For fears, terrors and nightmares, both in adults and children.

Work Stress Mix - Gentian, Hornbeam, Impatiens, Mustard, Olive, Rock Water, Vervain, Walnut, White Chestnut. Refreshes and restores interest when stressed at work. Rescue Remedy and equivalents are also useful.

Follow Your Heart Mix - Centaury, Cerato, Chestnut Bud, Pine, Rock Water, Wild Oat. To help us to follow our intuition and the path in life that is best for us, even if it is not obvious at present. Also helps us gain wisdom from life's experiences.

Blues Mix - Gentian, Gorse, Mustard, Sweet Chestnut, Walnut, Wild Rose, Willow, Despair (Bailey). Helps lift low moods, sadness and allows the sunshine back into life. Not instead of conventional antidepressants if advised by a medical practitioner.

Past Abuse Mix - Agrimony, Crab Apple, Gentian, Gorse, Holly, Mustard, Pine, Rock Rose, Star of Bethlehem, Sweet Chestnut, Walnut, Willow, Childhood and Grief (Bailey). Useful for cases of past emotional, physical and sexual abuse - Australian Bush Sexuality Essence would be useful as well for sexual abuse.

Insomnia Mix - Impatiens, Rock Rose, Vervain and White Chestnut. Useful for releasing mental and emotional patterns and excitement that prevents refreshing sleep.

Abund Essence - dissolves fear of lack, poverty consciousness and pessimism, bringing trust, belief in abundance and the ability to share happily.
